The Millennium Earl
| The story's main antagonist. Also known as "the Earl
of Millennium", he tricks people with dead relatives and friends into
creating Akumas. He is a sorcerer from long ago, and he plans to lead
the world to its death. Some time in the past he formed an alliance
with the Noah family, who call him "Duke Millennium". Hoshino says she
based the Earl of Millennium off a legendary alchemist/preacher (most
likely the Count of St Germain or Nicolas Flamel, though in many ways
he also reminiscent of Dorian Gray, possibly referenced in "Dorian Gray
man" and thus "D.Gray-Man", as adapted in the film The League of Extraordinary
Gentlemen) whose tale even claims he still may be alive somewhere. In appearance, the Earl resembles a grotesque caricature of a Victorian gentleman -- a rotund figure in cape and top hat, with an enormous grin that remains fixed even when he is speaking and even eating, and his eyes permanently hidden behind a pair of pince-nez spectacles. In the manga, almost every one of his lines of dialog ends with a heart; in the anime, he invariably uses polite Japanese. Throughout the story, he displays two different personalities. The first is his normal cheerful, friendly, and happy attitude, almost like a friendly old uncle. With the Noah, he's a member of the family, and is particularly playful and affectionate towards Road. His other personality is one of sheer, sadistic malice, capable of happily playing with people's lives. He wears a different hat in each encounter, each with a different decoration. In a gag comic in Volume 2 of the manga, he is shown taking off his hat, and having another set of ears. His main form of combat involves his umbrella Lero. He has also shown the ability to create massive explosions of dark energy. The Earl is also able to summon a large black sword that is the opposite of Allen's Crown Clown sword. His physical skills are also impressive, since he is able to move at a speed and agility deceiving of his size, and showing strength to easily throw Allen with almost zero effort. The Earl is able to survive direct hits from an Exorcist's Innocence without taking any damage as well, as seen when Lavi engulfed him with a powerful Hi Ban attack, and even when an illusionary Earl was able to survive Allen's Cross Grave attack without taking any damage at all. During his brief fight with Allen Walker he refers to Allen's new Innocence and states that Allen resembles the "Whiteface Clown who picks on the Auguste Clown". This is a reference to 19th century performing clowns, the Whiteface Clow (usually associated with or clad in white) is always the lead in a performance - the clown who throws the pie, while the Auguste Clown (usually associated with or clad in red) is always the fool - the clown who receives the pie in the face. Allen is called the Whiteface Clown by The Earl because of the form his innocence takes but The Earl may be labeling himself as the Auguste Clown because he's always getting "picked on" by Allen. The Earl recently traveled to Edo to complete the construction of a new ark to replace the old 'defective' ark. The Earl plays the tune of destruction on a piano and the white ark disappears while a black ark comes out. As the white ark is destroyed he laughs and cries even though he said to Road and Lulu Bell that he has a cold. With the black ark complete, the Earl and Noah fly away from Edo. However, due to Allen Walker's interference, the Earl was only able to download 20% of his Akuma producing 'egg'. As a result, the Earl is currently incapable of making any new Akuma, and it is implied that it will take a long time to rebuild the plant. This is the first time in the story when the Earl is seen losing his composure, his face contorted with pure seething rage. However, it is later shown that he is rebuilding his plant and his key concern was what the Black Order might gain from studying the captured egg The Earl is shown to have a human form, first seen when he visits Sheryl Kamelot at his estate with Tyki Mikk, although the Earl's face in human form was never shown. It is also the first time in the manga that he has no heart at the end of his speech nor a smile. The Earl was worried about what the Black Order researched from the egg as it would ruin his plans if they knew the meaning of the Akuma's evolution, leading to "The Heart" knowing about it as well. The Earl also ponders about why he did not kill Allen on the night they have met, mentioning how he has been having dreams since he knew Allen's connection with the 14th Noah. Tyki Mikk mentions the Earl as being "human after all" and that "seeing him like that he did not look like the villain that turn the whole world against him" after watching the Earl(in human form) buy a flower from a poor girl. |

| Lero | ||
| Lero is the Earl's talking umbrella and golem, which appears as a normal cane umbrella with the addition of a small talking jack-o-lantern on the tip. It does not do much except for screaming around, adding its own name on almost every sentence said by it. When used by Earl, it works as a flying umbrella in the style of Mary Poppins. It's very loyal to the Earl and likes to stay with him, but Road often takes Lero with her against Lero's connivance. When in her usage, he acts as a witch's broom and an umbrella. Lero also seems to be the holder of the Earl's sword when it is not in use, as seen in chapter 79 when the Earl pulls the sword out of Lero while fighting Allen Walker. Additionally, the Earl used Lero as a beacon of sorts, as seen in Volume 1 when he used it to summon a swarm of Level 1 Akuma to attack Allen. Lero was also sent to kidnap Lenalee while she was in Edo and transport her to the Ark so she could be destroyed as it downloaded and collapsed. Lero ended up taking several other Exorcists along too. Right now, Lero is reunited with the Earl. | ||
| The Noah Family | ||
The direct descendants of Noah. A family of superhumans who cooperate with the Earl. The Noah are characterized by their grey skin tone, yellow eyes and a horizontal line of seven cross-shaped markings on their foreheads. Each of the Noahs possesses his/her own unique ability, as well as a common ability to destroy Innocence. Six of thirteen expected members have been introduced, making seven possible Noahs who have yet to appear. Skin has been rumored to be killed by Kanda after the battle in the Noah's Ark. A fourteenth Noah was killed by the Earl for betraying them, but has never been properly revealed. In chapter 166, Cross Marian says that Mana Walker was the fourteenth's older brother, and Allen has the fourteenth's memories implanted in him. |

| Akuma | ||
Akuma make up the bulk of the Earl of Millennium's army. Akuma are
demonic constructs that serve mainly as foot soldiers under the command
of the Earl and the Noah. Akuma are created through a multi-stage process.
First, the Earl locates someone who is grieving from the loss of a loved
one. The Earl then appears to them and convinces them that he can bring
their loved one back to life. Next, the Earl presents a skeletal 'doll'
and tells the grieving individual to call out the person's name and
ask them to come back to life inside the construct. Upon doing so, a
pentagram is inscribed on the doll's head along with the name of the
individual. Upon coming to life, the Earl commands the doll to kill
the grieving person and then 'wear their skin', taking on the identity
of the griever and powered by the loved one's bound soul.
Numerous akuma have been seen in the series. A few have been named, and a few have had backgrounds revealed. Some characters have been introduced, and then turned into akumas. The akuma here are akuma who have been named, and have been their own person, separate from the souls embedded into their circuitry. |
| Claire/Mark Akuma | ||
| Claire was killed when a cast iron cross skewered her when the rope suspending it broke. In a deep state of grief, Mark partnered with the Millennium Earl to resurrect her as an Akuma. However, the Earl ordered her to kill him and wear his skin, and she was powerless to resist. Posing as Mark, she would kill anyone in the old church at night. When Moore came to investigate the murders and disappearances, she came across Allen. Allen revealed what Mark really was, but not before it wiped out the entire police force, save for Moore. Allen then exorcised the Akuma back into Claire and allowed her to rest in peace. Claire's Akuma form is common among Level 1 Akuma. | ||
| The Mother Akuma | ||
| Jean's friend Leo's mother passed away suddenly one day. The impact on Leo was great. He enlisted the help of the Earl even though he knew it would turn his mother into an Akuma. After turning her into an Akuma, the Earl ordered her to kill her son and wear his skin, and she was powerless to resist. The Akuma was then assigned to pose as Leo to get close to Jean, and lure him into a trap. The trap would have worked if only Allen hadn't come. Allen destroyed all of the Akuma present, which were all Gun Akuma, including this one. | ||
| Pierrot | ||
The first level 2 Akuma encountered by Allen and Kanda. He was introduced as a level 1.5 akuma, and evolved to level 2 after shooting through his force field prison and blowing up a finder's head. It has the ability to clone anyone and their power, even the ability to fly (due to the two bat wings on its back). However, it is personified that he can also copy the appearance and abilities of elements (which is shown when it transformed into sand when it had its final attack on Allen and Kanda). It should be noted that when he mimics other people his appearance is a mirror image, with each side reversed. Pierrot was ultimately destroyed by the combined powers of Allen and Kanda. He was the first level 2 Akuma, as well as the first level 1.5 Akuma, to be shown in the series. Also, only in the show, he is a male Akuma with a female soul. |
| Clock Akuma Squad | ||
A squad of akuma who attacked Allen, Miranda, and Lenalee
when they were in the "Rewinding Town". |
| Top Hat Akuma | ||
A level 2 Akuma that attacked Allen and Lavi from on top of a building by hitting steel at them, which melted after impact. It was destroyed by Lavi. Another one (or the same one) was seen behind a building when Allen and Lavi left for the hospital. Another one attacked the hotel room where Bookman, Komui, and Lenalee were. It killed the two finders, but was beaten into a million pieces by Bookman. It was ultimately destroyed by Lenalee when it made one final jump for Komui. It delivered the message of the Millennium Earl's declaration of war on the world and the Black Order. One interesting characteristic of this Akuma is that it does not have a level 1 akuma face anywhere on its body. This is due to the fact that all level 2 Akuma have a level one face somewhere on their body (or even as their real face). |
| Eliade | ||
A level 2 Akuma that serves The Earl of Millennium. The sacrifice used to make her was a beautiful woman so that was the form she assumed as a human. Eliade believed that this was the reason why, after recovering her intellect when she evolved into a level 2 Akuma, she became obsessed with beauty and shopping. Although her beauty let her become a popular woman, her Akuma nature always made her feel ugly. Even so, she felt incomplete and wanted to love someone else, as an Akuma, she believed was impossible for her. After that, she met Krory and the two began a complex relationship. She was later killed by Arystar Krory after he discovered that she was an Akuma. Before her death, Eliade said she wanted to love Arystar. Eliade could produce bubbles that absorb all the water inside the victim's body in an instant. Although she was destroyed, Eliade's ghost appears to Arystar when he is fighting Jasdevi, where she says she could neither go to Heaven or Hell due to her lack of a soul and told him not to die to join her before urging him to fight on. Arystar calls her a delusion, but proclaims his love for her anyway. |
| Eshi | ||
| The level 3 Akuma that attacked Lenalee and her friends on the way to Edo. Eshi had the ability to manipulate gravity by attaching chains made from his dark matter which increased the amount of gravity around the target. He also had superhuman strength and agility. Before becoming an Akuma, he was an artist from Japan, shown by the way he starts every sentence he makes with "Title" as though he's naming a painting. Eshi tends to refer to himself in the third person. Eshi is a Close-Combat type Akuma, stating that is why he has such strong armour. Lenalee's battle with Eshi resulted in her almost losing her life. He was killed by a combination of Lenalee's Shittsui no Tougi: Tetsukaze and Eshi's own ability. Eshi is the first level 3 Akuma to appear in the series. | ||
| Sachiko/Chomesuke | ||
| Chomesuke is an Akuma that was modified by the Exorcist
General Cross Marian prior to the events of D.Gray-man. Though still
an Akuma under the control of the Millennium Earl, Chomesuke can repress
his dominance for a limited amount of time and do as she wishes. Her final mission is to bring a warning to the group of Exorcists (Lavi, Lenalee, Krory, Bookman, and Miranda) who are heading towards Japan in hopes of finding Cross. During the Exorcists' ocean battle with the Akuma, Sachiko keeps their ship floating by propping it up while underwater. Afterwards, she retrieves an unconscious Lenalee from the depths of the ocean and returns her to her friends. Although Sachiko is an Akuma, Timcanpy lands on her head, signaling that she has a connection with Cross. She explains to the Exorcists the peril of their upcoming journey. Despite this, they still decide to carry on. With time against their side, she decides to push the ship to Edo, increasing their speed. Lavi opens a window and makes a remark that she is going really fast, calling her “Chomesuke.” Upon hearing this, Sachiko blushes, showing that she has some kind of affinity towards him; she decides to keep that name. Once they arrive to Edo, Chomesuke takes on her human form, much to the surprise of all the Exorcists. Sadly, their guide, Kawamura, another modified level 2 Akuma, is captured and devoured before their eyes. Because of this, Chomesuke decides to take the Exorcists to Edo herself. On the way, she is captured by a level 3 Akuma and tells the group to leave her behind. Lavi saves her, saying that without her leading the way, all they will do is continue running away from Akuma. Soon, the Millennium Earl issues a powerful call to all the Akuma in Japan, a call much too strong for Chomesuke's will to withstand. Slowly, she loses control over herself, the desire to kill humans arising once more. Before completely losing her sanity, however, Chomesuke vows to help the Exorcists to the end and sacrifices her life so that the Exorcists may survive to confront a few Noah Clan members. |
| Kawamura | ||
| A level 2 Akuma and a friend of Chomesuke's. Like her pal, she was also modified by Cross Marian. She was killed and eaten by a level 3 Akuma trio (body and soul). | ||
| Thread | ||
| A level 3 Akuma that was killed by Allen. Like Eshi, he was a level 3 Akuma. He was hand-chosen by Tyki Mikk and used Noah's Ark to enter the Asia Branch in order to capture Allen, and therefore was accompanied by a Tease. He was able to break in, but was caged in the large room where Allen had trained. In order to keep Thread from going too berserk, Fou took the image of Allen and trapped herself in the room with it. When Allen got in, Fou was nearly dead. He was the one to reveal the Noahs' whereabouts, and was the first Akuma to be destroyed by Allen's gamma form. He had the ability to send energy "threads" from cylinders on his arms into their atomic and slowly decompose the structure hit. Thread was unique in that in his final moments, he cooperated with Allen, giving him information on the Noahs and even repenting slightly from his murderous nature. This could also have been due to the fact that Thread was touched by Crown Clown, the Innocence had freed his mind somewhat, and his murderous intent had been subdued slightly. Thread himself stated that he was feeling "good". His trapped soul was the first to confront Allen through the cursed eye. His soul begged for the destruction of the Akuma and for Allen's love. After Allen performs Cross Grave, Thread's soul smiles and thanks Allen, grateful for his release. | ||
| Mr. Converted | ||
| "Mr. Converted", as he was called by Froi Tiedoll, was the bee-like converted akuma escort to Edo of Tiedoll and his group. He chastised Tiedoll when he told his team to aid Cross's team, ultimately leaving him unguarded. He self-destructed when he started feeling 'hungry'. He was the second Akuma to self-destruct in the story. | ||
| Combined Akuma | ||
| An enormous Akuma that was the result of large numbers of Akuma in Edo fusing. It had three faces, two on its cheeks and one larger one in the middle. Its main attack, "Evil Star Gita" consisted of five balls appearing around its main body in the form of an upside down pentagram, shooting vastly destructive laser-like beams. Sachiko was hit and presumably killed by one of these beams in an attempt to attack it. Eventually it was caught in Mari's threads and poisoned by the melody he played with them. It was finished off by Kanda slicing its main face in half, surprising onlookers by making it look easy after others had tried and failed. Despite its powerful attack, it is extremely slow and its attack is extremely inaccurate, its only advantage being tall and having its head as its only weak point. Thus, it does not seem to be worth the effort(the thousands of level 3 akuma used to form it may have been used for other more destructive purposes). Cross Marian, Klaud Nine and Winter Socalo have easily destroyed many of them during the invasion of the Black Order HQ without any effort. However, the eye of one such Akuma attacked Johnny Gill and evolved to a level 4 Akuma, the first confirmed one in over 100 years for both the Black Order and the Bookmen. | ||
| Angel Kid Akuma | ||
It's was the first Level 4 Akuma encountered in the series that was born as a result of a large number of sacrifices of human and Level 3 Akuma being absorbed into a Combined Akuma. This Level 4 seems innocent like a child normally, but after remembering its purpose and what it was, "a weapon of slaughter", it has gradually become more sadistic and lustful for death during its attack on the Black Order. This Akuma is extremely powerful, being able to block Allen's Crown Clown in its sword form with one hand, flicking Allen into a wall with a force that knocked him out, sending out a scream able to disrupt any exorcist's synchronization to low levels, even Generals, and seemingly killing General level Exorcists with a blast of Dark Matter (making it on par if not stronger than most Noah). The Child Akuma was trapped in a Talisman prison after trying to kill Komui Lee, but it did not stop it for long (mostly because it did not make much of an attempt to escape instead considering the whole battle a game). After attempting to kill Komui while descending down the elevator to Hevlaska, Kanda saved Komui, but at the cost of losing most of his shoulder to the Akuma's poison. The Level 4 was about to kill Lenalee, when Allen returned to the fight, much to the surprise of the Child Akuma and giving time for Lenalee to re-synchronize with her Innocence. The Child Akuma was about to kill Allen when Lenalee regained her Innocence and fought the Level 4 together with him. With Lenalee's new Innocence, she and Allen managed to pin down the Akuma by attempting to drive Crown Clown into it's torso, with Lenalee's and Allen's combined strength. The Akuma is so strong that it managed to hold the sword back, but not till Cross Marian appears and uses 'Carte Garde' to somehow influence the Level 4 to remove his hands from the blade. Without the hands pushing back, the sword was driven into the Level 4's body. However, the Child Akuma miraculously survived the blow dealt by Allen and pushed him and his Sword of Exorcism back, out of pure rage and declaring its hatred for 'Innocence'. Marian took over and managed to cause it to swell up when the Level 4 underestimated Marian and found itself with 6 bullets in its body (though it was strong enough to stop one of the bullets, something even Tyki could not do). The Child Akuma attempts to escape, but was pierced again by Allen and Lenalee when it was delayed from escaping by both Klaud Nine and Winter Sokaro. As mentioned, it resembles a small, short child. It has two halos suspended over its head, and the traditional Akuma pentagrams. The Akuma is laden with tribal tattoos, with mannequin-like seams connecting its joints. Oddly enough, the Akuma's right breast is swollen like a female's, but its left more resembles a male's pectoral muscle, suggesting that the Akuma is androgynous. |
| Skulls | ||
| Skulls are the guardians and caretakers of the Earl's
Akuma-producing plant. Skulls are humanoids who wear large black robes
and have skull-like heads, as their names imply. Skulls are neither
Akuma, nor completely human, and are created by transforming a human
with a 'suitable' mind using a special form of magic. A Skull places
their fingers against the forehead of a victim and chant an incantation.
The human is then surrounded by arcs of energy and then shrouded in
a cocoon made of a black thread-like substance, finally emerging a few
moments later as a Skull. Skulls are very resistant, capable of taking
a bullet to the head without any lasting damage. The Skulls first appeared in Edo right before the Black Arc appeared. General Cross Marian had defeated a large group of them after having disguised himself as one of them. They reappear when Lulu Bell attacks the Black Order Headquarters, following the Level 3 Akuma. The Akuma line up the surviving members of the HQ science staff and a Skull walks along marking 'unsuitable minds' with an X, upon which a Level 3 Akuma smashes their head with its foot. When a 'suitable mind' is located, they are transformed into a Skull, such as Tapp. Skulls also seem to possess a "hive mind" as Tapp threw Johnny Gill despite Johnny's assistance, all from an order from one of the senior Skulls. Though, through sheer willpower, a Skull can reject this, though the only case was in Tapp, who thought of his friends. Skulls also seem photosensitive, as they turn into dust when they are in contact with light. |
